Coverage Portability

Coverage Portablility

There may be some confusion regarding the "Guaranteed Renewability" and "Portability" of the Group Long Term Care Policy for the employees of the School District. We hope that the following will clarify the insurance company’s intent.

Your enrollment packet includes an Outline of Coverage. On page two of the Outline of Coverage, under Item #4, the reasons for termination of the group plan are outlined in bullet form under the title "When Coverage Will End". Just below is a section titled, "Portable Coverage". If an individual leaves the group, or the group plan is terminated for any reason, the coverage the individual had under the group plan will continue. This is assuming the individual elects portable coverage within 31 days from the date the group coverage would otherwise end, and continues to pay premiums.

The portable coverage that the individual chooses to elect is guaranteed renewable, portable and offered at the same rates paid for the group plan. UNUM will bill the individual directly from that point forward, and payroll deduction will be discontinued.
